green graffiti

installation by Anna Garforth

Or perhaps grown on said public surface? Designer and activist Anna Garforth is redefining our perception of graffiti.  Her moss typography is a playful experiment in natural materials that juxtaposes the urban jungle with a product of actual wilderness.  These installations are part of a green graffiti movement that highlights the beauty and aesthetics of nature in an ever changing and developing society.

I ate at a restaurant in Ortaköy when I was in İstanbul a few years ago that had a great tiled wall made up of small 3x6 beveled mirrors.  I noticed this because I was the unfortunate one in the group seated facing the wall rather than the view of the Bosphorus behind me.  Thankfully, the mirrored subway tile reflected bits of what I was missing back to me and helped to expand and brighten the space.  I have been dying to try out this tile ever since - I featured it behind the bar of a restaurant project I did in design school, meant to shine and sparkle behind rows of bottles.  Hopefully I will get a chance to install it in real life sometime soon.
